VACATION RENTAL SCAM TARGETING RENTAL SEEKERS
Please be aware that scams DO take place on the internet, so you have to do your
due diligence when engaging in ANY transaction on the Internet. There are
basically 2 types of scams pertaining to the Vacation Rental Industry; those that
target vacation rental home owners, and those that target vacation rental seekers.
This is a typical scam targeting the vacation rental seeker. GO HERE to learn about the
scam targeting vacation rental home owners.
Scammers have been working the New York City Manhattan Broadway area
for some time now, and we have been successful at continually weeding
them out of your system.
I don't know why they keep targeting this area, but any other area is
susceptible to being targeted this way... so if you are seeking a vacation rental
holiday, you have to be aware of this scam and take measures to make sure you
don't fall prey to it.
The scammer will post a fake ad. They'll list a beautiful property and all the
details about it and at a price that's very inexpensive. So to you, it looks like
a great deal.
You contact them by e-mail inquiring on the days you want to stay. They reply
and tell you its available. You decide you want to stay there, so ask them
what is involved. They then ask you to make a deposit to secure the unit for the timeframe
you want it.
You send the person money as a down payment, security deposit, to rent the
place for a certain time period. But the place isn't theirs to rent. Not
only do you lose your security deposit, but you show up on vacation, possibly after
having flown overseas, and you knock on the door only to find out that the person living
there didn't post the ad... a scammer posted it, and just used that persons address.
These scammers also use pictures of the interior of the place that they collect
from other vacation rental or property sales web sites.
In short, if you feel its a scam, it probably is. If the price is too good to be
true, it probably is. Before sending ANYONE money for a security deposit, you
want to make sure you know who this person is, have talked with them, and know
that they are the owners of the unit they have advertised for rent.
